Class 6 Students Become Children's Book Illustrators

Last spring, our Class 5 students (now Class 6) learned about the nonprofit, Ethiopia Reads! The organization’s mission is to empower and strengthen Ethiopian communities through the art of reading. Rebecca Magill, lower school art teacher, has been involved with the organization and volunteered our then-fifth graders to become illustrators for their children's book, Meet the Ethiopian Wolf.

Our students learned the art of silkscreen printing to create the book’s illustrations. Each student read the story, then drew images to match the content on each page. The drawings were cut out, and the remaining paper was attached to a fine mesh screen. Ink was then squeegeed over the cutout image, resulting in a print, or reproduction, of the image. They then glued on each wolf's eyes and ears. Mrs. Magill illustrated the backgrounds, made with tissue paper.

The book was published this November as one of many books Ethiopian schools receive from the nonprofit. Click here to order a copy of the book from Barnes and Nobles!
