Dear Members of the Dexter Southfield Community,
We came to the fork in the road—and we took it.
With apologies to the esteemed Yogi Berra, I refer to the path we, as the school community, took to seek accreditation by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (NEASC) in 2013. In that connection, we studied ourselves with rigor, we reaffirmed our mission, and we sought to identify how the School could demonstrate leadership in education at every level of school life.
The accreditation effort and results affirmed the desire of your Board of Trustees to chart a clear course for the future. To that end, the Board and the Head of School are pleased to announce the start of a strategic planning process designed to guide Dexter Southfield for the next five years and more. So far, we have undertaken to identify vision and goals and to outline strategic priorities, with an objective of ensuring the highest quality experience throughout our community. The priorities on which we will focus are four in number:
1. Student Experience
2. Faculty Support and Development
3. Facilities Development; and
4. Financial Strength
Many members of our community have participated in the early phases of the strategic plan, and Head of School Todd Vincent and I would like to thank all of them and all of you in the future who give generously of your thinking and perspectives. In the ensuing phases of this process, which will be completed in the Fall of 2014, there will be opportunities for you to follow the strategic plan’s development. The Administration has instituted a section on the school website to facilitate your contributions of time and reflections. Visit these pages for updates about the planning process.
The Board of Trustees and School Administration welcome the entire community to this endeavor. We are excited about the challenges which the strategic plan will identify and we are confident that, all together, we will continue to build on and improve the legacy we have been given in the nine decades that have preceded us today.
With warm regards to all.
Wm. Shaw McDermott
President, Dexter Southfield Board of Trustee
