Pre-Kindergarten

The Pre-Kindergarten program is half-day with an Extended Day session available until 3:30 p.m. Pre-Kindergarten is designed for students who are four by September 1 of their Pre-K year and, in the judgment of the school, would benefit from classroom experiences that enrich their total development. The program incorporates the development of basic readiness skills in specific theme-based activities. These teacher-directed and independent activities integrate language arts, math, fine motor skills, Spanish, art, and science. Themes include seasonal topics, such as apples, hibernation, holidays, winter weather, our bodies, spring, and other topics such as artists.

The Pre-Kindergarten language and reading readiness program focuses on verbal expression, phonics, beginning reading skills, letter formation, and invented spelling. Through a variety of teacher-directed and independent activities, phonological awareness, letter recognition, letter-sound correspondence, and vocabulary are taught. ‚Äč

The mathematics curriculum in Pre-Kindergarten helps children develop a strong number sense and an awareness of mathematics in everyday life. Using various manipulative materials, students work in areas such as one-to-one correspondence, reading and writing numerals, patterns, graphing, the calendar, measurement, and problem solving.

Students visit a variety of venues in their own building and throughout the campus for their music, computer, science, and art lessons. Taught by specialists, these classes generally relate to a topic being studied. Students also enjoy two sports classes and use a variety of indoor and outdoor spaces, including the Playscape, for free play.

Social development includes problem solving, self-help, manners, sharing, friendship, kindness, teamwork, independence, responsibility, and oral communication.

Extended Day

Extended Day is an optional program from 11:45 a.m.–3:30 p.m. At an additional cost, students may enroll by trimester, for all, or part of a week. The session broadens and enriches students’ early childhood experiences and includes a hot lunch, rest period, and a variety of activities.
