Fine and Performing Arts

Research has proven that participation in the performing and visual arts empowers students to express themselves artistically and creatively and to develop an appreciation for cultural events and the world around them. Engagement in the arts also enhances their ability to learn in other areas including reading, writing, and mathematics. The Department of Arts at Dexter Southfield School is committed to having the arts play a significant role in the life of students and the School. Department courses are designed to teach students specific skills, encourage problem solving and creative and higher order thinking, provide opportunities for self-expression, and teach individual responsibility and discipline. In all areas students are evaluated on their mastery of the material, skill development, and participation. In addition, art exhibitions, music and dance performances, and theatre productions highlight student achievement and provide opportunities for assessment.

Students are required to complete two semesters in the performing arts and two semesters in the fine arts. The performing arts requirement may be met either by successful completion of two semester-length courses, which are graded, or by performing in two plays. The fine arts requirement may be met by successful completion of two semester-length courses.
Introductory and foundational classes as well as more advanced courses are available to all students, and students are encouraged to pursue their individual interests and talents.
Honors and Advanced Placement sections are offered to qualified students in Classes 9 through 12. Placement in an Honors or Advanced Placement section requires special permission. Only those students who have demonstrated commitment to excellence in the fine and performing arts will be allowed to participate in the Honors or AP program. In order to be qualified for an AP course, a student must have earned a year-end grade of A- or higher for the prerequisite, or a B in a previous Honors course, and must have permission of the Head of the Upper School.
