The goal of the mathematics program is to develop the critical thinking and mathematical reasoning skills of each student. Teachers focus on the knowledge and mastery of skills and on their applications in real-life situations. Students are expected to learn to read, write, and speak effectively about mathematics, both independently and while working in groups. Daily homework problems are an essential component to each course, providing students with the opportunity to practice problem-solving. Tests and quizzes during each marking period are designed to assess students’ abilities to synthesize all current topics. Additional labs and projects supplement course concepts by providing students with hands-on applications. Regular and Honors sections, as well as electives, allow for the needs of each student to be met.

Enrollment in a mathematics course is required throughout the four years of secondary school. Successful completion of Algebra 2 is required before moving on to elective courses. Students will consult members of the mathematics department regarding course choices.

Honors and Advanced Placement sections in geometry and higher are offered to students who have demonstrated commitment to excellence in mathematics. In order to qualify for Honors or Advanced Placement, a student must have earned a year-end grade of A- or higher for the prerequisite, or a B or higher in a previous Honors course, and must have permission of the Math Department.

The use of technology provides an opportunity to enrich mathematical understanding. As such, all mathematics courses in the upper school make use of graphing calculators.
