Scholastic and SISAL

Scholastic

Each year, the Art Department reviews the exceptional artwork our students have created to select some for submission to two prestigious local exhibitions. The Scholastic Art Awards was founded in 1923 and is one of the country's oldest organizations supporting the achievement of young artists and writers. The program is administered by the School of the Museum of Fine Arts which collects thousands and thousands of entries from students across the state. Over the years, many of our students have earned honorable mention, silver, and gold keys for their outstanding work. The Art Department congratulates all of our students who submit artwork to this impressive exhibition.

SISAL

Dexter Southfield has been honored to host the annual Small Independent School Arts League (SISAL) juried exhibition. This annual show was founded in 1992 by Falmouth Academy to provide a venue for schools like Dexter Southfield to exhibit student artwork to a larger community. Outside jurors are invited to evaluate submissions in categories ranging from metalsmithing to fine arts. In 2015, 17 schools submitted their best student work to participate in this year's show, and Dexter Southfield had the privilege of living with the wonderful collection for two weeks. Students, faculty, and staff enjoyed both viewing and discussing pieces as they toured the exhibit, which was displayed throughout the Clay Center, Sears Building, and MidRise. It was a common occurrence to find several students or classes gathered around the artwork to discuss what they saw and how it made them feel. In total, more than 550 pieces of art were submitted in 13 different categories. There were 67 Middle School awards (First, Second, Third, and Honorable Mention) and 83 Upper School awards presented at an Awards Ceremony. Dexter Southfield won a total of 20 awards.
