Extended Day Program for Pre-K to 5th Grade Students - FAQ's

Will my child receive a snack?

Snack will be provided. Snack may include a combination of fruit, crackers and cookies.

When does the After School program operate?

The program runs Monday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. when school is open.

It will NOT meet on the following dates during the 2017-2018 school year:

  • Friday, October 6 - Monday, October 9
  • Tuesday, October 31
  • Friday, November 10
  • Wednesday, November 22 - Monday, November 27
  • Friday, December 15 - Monday, January 1
  • Friday, January 12 - Monday, January 15
  • Friday, February 16 - Tuesday, February 20
  • Friday, March 9 - Friday, March 23
  • Friday, April 13 - Tuesday, April 17
  • Friday, May 25- Monday, April 28

What is the cost of the After School program?

$12.50 per hour. Partial hours will be billed in 15 minute increments.

Where do I pick up my child at dismissal and is transportation provided?

Prior to 5:15 p.m. - Please pick up your child from the Hewitt Dining Room.
After 5:15 p.m. - Please pick up your child from the building under Fiske Hall.
Unfortunately, there is no bus transportation after 3:30 p.m.

Who is the point of contact for the After School program?

The program is being managed by the campus programs department under the supervision of Ian Moorhouse, Director of Campus Programs. He can be contacted at imoorhouse@dextersouthfield.org or by phone at 617-751-3543.

Can I sign up for one day a week, two days a week, etc.?

Yes. You can sign up your child for as little or as much as you like. To register, please email afterschool@dextersouthfield.org.

Who will be taking care of my child during the After School program and what is the student/teacher ratio?

The program will be run by Dexter Southfield faculty and staff. In addition, part-time Program Assistants have been hired and trained to assist with the running of the program. There will be a ratio of one staff member for every 10 to 12 students.

What happens during a typical day?

3:25 p.m. - Program Assistants will meet students in the Hewitt Building by the main office as well as under Fiske Hall at the end of the hallway by the buses. Teachers will sign their students into the After School program with the Program Assistants. Students will be walked to the Hewitt Dining Room for snack.
3:45 p.m. - Students will split up into grade groupings for homework and reading. Younger students will participate in a group read or activity.
4:30 p.m. - On warmer days, students will have the option to go to the Playscape or watch a Middle or Upper School game. Indoor activities, including themed crafts or board games, will be offered. Older students will have the option of continuing with their homework during this time.
5:15 p.m.  - Students will pack up and will be walked over to the building under Fiske Hall for pick up. Parents will be required to sign their child out.
5:30 p.m. - Students should be picked up by a parent or guardian.

Will my child be grouped by grade level and gender?

Students will be split up into grade groupings for homework and reading. Younger students will have a group read. On warmer days, students will have the option to go to the Playscape or watch a middle or upper school game. Indoor activities including themed crafts or board games will be offered. Older students will have the option of continuing with their homework. The extended day program is co-ed.

What is the start and end date of the After School program?

First day - Monday, September 11, 2017 
Last day - Friday, June 1, 2018

The After School program will run when school is in session.
