After School Program for Pre-K to 5th Grade Students - FAQ

Will my child receive a snack?

Snack will be provided. Snack may include a combination of fruit, crackers and cookies.

When does the After School program operate?

The program runs Monday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. when school is open.

The first day is on Monday, September 9, 2019 and the last day is on May 29, 2020.

It will NOT meet on the following dates during the 2019-2020 school year:

  • Friday, October 11
  • Thursday, October 31
  • Friday, November 8 - Monday, November 11
  • Tuesday, November 26 - Monday, December 2
  • Friday, December 20 - Friday, January 3
  • Friday, January 17 - Monday, January 20
  • Friday, February 14 - Tuesday, February 18
  • Friday, March 13 - Friday, March 27
  • Friday, April 17 - Tuesday, April 21
  • Friday, May 22 - Monday, May 25

What is the cost of the After School program?

$13.00 per hour. Partial hours will be billed in 15 minute increments. All charges will be posted to your MyBackpack account at the end of the month.

Where do I pick up my child at dismissal and is transportation provided?

Your child can be picked up from the Student Center, which is located close to Fiske Hall.
Unfortunately, there is no bus transportation after 3:30 p.m.

Who is the point of contact for the After School program?

The program is being managed by the campus programs department under the supervision of Rachel Czubryt, Campus Programs Assistant. She can be contacted at or by phone at (617) 751-3625.

Can I sign up for one day a week, two days a week, etc.?

Yes. You can sign up your child for as little or as much as you like. To register, please email, your child's teacher, and by 2:00 p.m. on the day that you are attending to confirm they will stay with the program.

Who will be taking care of my child during the After School program and what is the student/teacher ratio?

The program will be run by Dexter Southfield faculty and staff. In addition, part-time After School Assistants from the Upper School will assist with the running of the program. There will be a ratio of one staff member for every 10 to 12 students.

What happens during a typical day?

3:25 p.m. - After School staff will meet students in the Student Center, which is located by Fiske Hall. Teachers will sign their students into the After School program, and children will then be provided with a snack.
3:45 p.m. - After buses have departed, attendance has been taken, and snacks are generally finished, students in grades 2 and up will be encouraged to start their homework. Board games and crafts will be available to all students in attendance.
4:30 p.m. - On warmer days, students may have the option to watch a Middle or Upper School game. Indoor activities, including themed crafts, board games, or gym time (when available), will be offered. Older students will have the option of continuing with their homework during this time.
6:00 p.m. - Students should be picked up by a parent or guardian in the Hewitt dining room.

Will my child be grouped by grade level and gender?

Students will be split up into grade groupings for homework to encourage focus. The extended day program is co-ed.
