After School Programs FAQ

When does the After School program for classes PK- 5 operate?

The program runs Monday through Friday from 3:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. when school is open.

The first day is on Monday, September 9, 2019 and the last day is on May 29, 2020.

It will NOT meet on the following dates during the 2019-2020 school year:

  • Friday, October 11
  • Thursday, October 31
  • Friday, November 8 - Monday, November 11
  • Tuesday, November 26 - Monday, December 2
  • Friday, December 20 - Friday, January 3
  • Friday, January 17 - Monday, January 20
  • Friday, February 14 - Tuesday, February 18
  • Friday, March 13 - Friday, March 27
  • Friday, April 17 - Tuesday, April 21
  • Friday, May 22 - Monday, May 25

What happens during a typical day at After School?

3:25 p.m. - After School staff will meet students in the Student Center, which is located by Fiske Hall. Teachers will sign their students into the After School program, and children will then be provided with a snack.
3:45 p.m. - After buses have departed, attendance has been taken, and snacks are generally finished, students in grades 2 and up will be encouraged to start their homework. Board games and crafts will be available to all students in attendance.
4:30 p.m. - On warmer days, students may have the option to watch a Middle or Upper School game. Indoor activities, including themed crafts, board games, or gym time (when available), will be offered. Older students will have the option of continuing with their homework during this time.
6:00 p.m. - Students should be picked up by a parent or guardian in the Hewitt dining room.

When does the Homework Club for classes 6-8 operate?

The program runs on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays from 3:30 to 5:00 p.m. when the school is open. 

Homework Club begins on Monday, September 16, 2019. The last day is on May 28, 2020.

What happens during a typical day at Homework Club?

Students meet in the Clay Center dining hall at dismissal to sign in and grab a snack. Once attendance has been confirmed, students will be encouraged to select a table and begin working on their homework. A member of the middle school faculty is present for any questions. Families may pick up their student any time between 3:30 and 5:00 p.m.

What is the cost of these programs?

For After School students
$13.00 per hour. Partial hours will be billed in 15 minute increments. All charges will be posted to your MyBackpack account at the end of the month.

For Homework Club students
There is no cost for the Homework Club program.

How can I confirm my child's attendance?

Please contact your child's homeroom teacher,, and by 2:00 p.m. on each day that you would like your child to attend.

If contacting after 2:00 p.m., please contact (617) 751-3625 to confirm attendance.

Will my child receive a snack?

Snack will be provided. Snack may include a combination of fruit, crackers and cookies.

Where do I pick up my child at dismissal and is transportation provided?

For After School students
Your child can be picked up from the Student Center, which is located close to Fiske Hall.

For Homework Club students
Your child can be picked up from dining hall in the second floor of the Clay Center.

Unfortunately, there is no bus transportation after 3:30 p.m.

Who will be taking care of my child and what is the student/teacher ratio?

The program will be run by Dexter Southfield faculty and staff. In addition, part-time After School Assistants from the Upper School will assist with the running of the Pre-K through class 5 program. There will be a ratio of one staff member for every 10 to 12 students.

Will my child be grouped by grade level and gender?

Students will be split up into grade groupings for homework to encourage focus. All extended day programs are co-ed.
