News from the Hill
As part of the government and economics curriculum, Class 8 studies the branches of the government and their respective functions and scopes of power. Students then visit the Edward M. Kennedy Institute for the United States Senate where they immerse in the legislative process. The interactive simulation teaches key legislative issues and the skills necessary for effective law-making.
Students, acting as senators, examine a bill introduced to the Senate floor, modify it through committees and subcommittees, and vote on a final draft. The experience encourages students to develop a deeper understanding of the work vital to government, practice their public speaking skills in a new environment, and gain a new appreciation for their civic responsibilities. In addition, four Class 6 and 7 students joined as “members of the press,” observing the simulation and taking notes to report back to their grades.
