Academic Philosophy

At every level, a focus on grammar, writing, mathematics, and public speaking builds essential lifelong skills. Intellectual curiosity and confidence are fostered through our deliberate and coordinated curriculum that progresses between grades and disciplines and includes a wide variety of courses and cross-disciplinary and collaborative teaching and learning methods.

Our unique learning model—single-gender classrooms in PreK through Class 8 and a co-educational environment in Classes 9 through 12—is grounded in research and allows our students to thrive academically and socially. Dexter Southfield offers a single-gender environment ideal for success in lower grades while preparing students to navigate the integrated world into which they will graduate.

At Dexter Southfield, we know and care about the whole child. We consider students as individuals and aim to teach to their unique needs. There is a shared goal to know our students, help them discover who they are, and support their growth into their full potential. There is no one formula for success that fits every child. Within each division, there are multiple layers of support—from teachers to administrators—working together to assist both students and families as they navigate the developmental journey.

In all areas of our academic programming, we reinforce and challenge our students. In the Lower School, students are introduced to a breadth of material. In the Middle School, students begin to make their own choices in what they study. In the Upper School, students hone in on both their passions and their strengths and determine where those two intersect. We ensure that at every stage, students have a strong foundation of tools and skills to prepare them for success.
