Academic Support
Our dedicated learning specialists create structure and strategies to help every student thrive.
Embedded as faculty members within each division, our learning specialists work closely with homeroom teachers in the Lower School and with the department leadership, classroom teachers, and advisors in the Middle School and Upper School.
Students work toward individualized academic and skills-based goals while remaining focused on the core tenants of the Dexter Southfield academic experience: to learn the fundamentals, to develop independence and self-advocacy, and to be prepared for the emerging challenges of a changing world.
Huddle. Understand. Belong.
The Middle School HUB—an acronym for huddle, understanding, and belong—enhances academics and social experiences for students in Classes 6–8. The HUB is a place for students to receive one-on-one academic help, to learn in small groups, or simply spend focused time on their schoolwork. Throughout the year, the HUB host advisory groups and workshops dedicated to improving students' organizational skills, supporting exam preparation, and more.
Our library selections have grown to more than 1,500 titles, and we are now working with teachers to create advisory book club kits and a science fiction reading challenge. We are adding several periodicals to cater to our advanced readers.—Marie Walsh and Lisa Bauer, Directors of the Middle School HUB
