Academic Facilities
Dexter Southfield’s 36-acre campus includes academic facilities designed for students to succeed at every level.
In addition to countless classrooms, study areas, and quiet spaces, the following academic facilities enhance students learning each day.
Reading & Learning Center
The Reading & Learning Center is a state-of-the-art library and learning facility that houses more than 3,000 books used by PreK through Class 5 students. In addition to being the Lower School library, the Center regularly hosts special guests and displays student artwork and projects. Bold in color, with moveable chairs, cozy nooks, and even a cargo net, the Center is designed for students to curl up with a book, listen to special read-alouds, and develop a love of reading.
Innovation Lab
The Innovation Lab is a dedicated Lower School engineering space where students engage in hands-on, project-based STEM learning. In the Innovation Lab, students develop critical thinking, teamwork, creativity, and data-driven decision-making skills. Projects are often cross-disciplinary with Spanish, math, and social studies classes.
Garage
A hallmark of the Middle School experience, this 8,000-square-foot innovation center facilitates cross-disciplinary learning. The creative options are extensive: from building robots and circuits to cooking, creating art, and printing 3D projects.
HUB
The Middle School HUB–an acronym for huddle, understanding, and belong–houses more than 1,300 books and enhances academic and social experiences for students in Classes 6–8. The HUB is a place for students to receive one-on-one academic help, to learn in small groups, or simply spend focused time on their schoolwork. Throughout the year, the HUB host advisory groups and workshops dedicated to improving students' organizational skills, supporting exam preparation, and more.
College Counseling
The College Counseling Office provides individualized guidance for students in Classes 9–12 at every step of the college search and application process. The department houses a meeting room for college visits and small group sessions, as well as offices for each College Counselor.
Clay Center Academic Wing
Our new academic wing includes collaborative spaces for students and teachers to achieve their personal best. The space features six state-of-the-art classrooms and convening areas, expanding space for new course offerings for Advancement Placement and college-preparatory semester electives and for group and individual study, advisory meetings, and extracurricular activities.
Clay Center Science Labs
Two floors of the Clay Center house Upper School science labs to support our chemistry, physics, biology, and engineering courses. These large rooms have space for both classroom lectures and group lab work.
Observatory
The Observatory is home to a 24-inch deep-space reflector teaching telescope; a co-mounted 7-inch planetary refractor telescope with astrocam; and a 24-foot-diameter dome for large groups and classes. Capabilities include day and night viewing of stars, planets, galaxies, and orbiting satellites. The NASA-grade astronomical observatory is also home to the Upper School Observatory Docent Program.
