Success begins here.

Middle School is a transformative moment—a short yet defining chapter when students start exploring who they are, what they can do, and where they fit in the world. At Dexter Southfield, Classes 6–8 are more than a bridge to Upper School. They are an intentionally crafted experience that builds confidence, character, independence, and a grounded sense of self.

A Personal, Supportive Environment from Day One

Your child won’t get lost here. Middle School students build relationships in homerooms, Advisory groups, on teams, in clubs, and at the lunch table. Teachers scaffold the transition, classmates are welcoming, and the built-in social structures of the Middle School help new students make friends quickly and settle in confidently.

A Balanced and Developmentally-Aligned Gender Model

Dexter Southfield offers a Middle School structure unlike any other: single-sex academic classrooms within a co-educational school community. Students benefit from focused, supportive learning environments during an important developmental stage, while still enjoying co-ed experiences through recess, clubs, performing arts, and School-wide traditions. This model helps students build confidence in the classroom, form healthy friendships, and prepare naturally for our co-ed Upper School.

Joy in the Discovery of New Skills

Middle School is the perfect time to explore new interests, and Dexter Southfield makes it easy to join the fun. Whether your child has years of experience or is trying something for the first time, our programs are built to welcome beginners and challenge advanced learners.

Daily Interaction with Teachers—Not Just During Class

Our teachers perform many duties outside of class, whether leading an Advisory group, supporting a club, or coaching a team. Middle Schoolers and their teachers get to know each other in many roles, which helps form strong relationships naturally.  To ensure a smooth transition, teachers offer proactive check-ins, study skills coaching, structured feedback, and open communication with families.

—New Class 7 Parent

“We were worried he’d be the only new kid in his classes. By the end of the second week, he had a lunch group, a bus buddy, and a team.”

—Class 6 Parent

“The single-gender classrooms helped her step forward academically and socially. She participates more and is more comfortable taking healthy risks.”

—Class 7 Parent

“The structure has been exactly what he needed. He’s more organized, more confident, and actually excited about school now that he knows how to manage his day.”
