About the Lower School Student Observation

At Dexter Southfield, we believe every child arrives with unique strengths, interests, and unlimited potential. Learning in our Lower School is grounded in a strong foundation of reading, writing, and mathematics while cultivating good character and exposing students to a broad range of subjects and experiences. Along the way, we nurture in every child the qualities of a Renaissance Young Person—someone characterized by curiosity, intellectual exploration, and a commitment to continuous learning and personal growth.

Our Student Observation is the beginning of that journey. Rather than asking children to "perform," we create a warm, engaging experience that allows us to get to know them as learners, thinkers, and members of a community. We want to understand how your child naturally explores new ideas, approaches new experiences, and experiences the joy of learning.

What to Expect: PreK & Kindergarten

Your child will spend time with members of our faculty participating in a variety of classroom activities, including storytelling, imaginative play, hands-on exploration, creative problem-solving, and collaborative learning.

What to Expect: Classes 1–5

Students will participate in an hour-long experience where they will rotate through a variety of activities with members of our faculty, including:

• A brief literacy screening to better understand foundational reading skills
• Math activities that explore number sense, problem-solving, and mathematical thinking
• Small-group activities that encourage collaboration, communication, and creative thinking

What We Are Looking For

Whether your child is four years old or entering Class 5, we are looking beyond academic skills to better understand the whole child. We observe how students:

• Approach new learning experiences with curiosity and confidence.
• Think critically, solve problems, and persevere through challenges.
• Communicate their ideas, questions, and needs.
• Interact respectfully with teachers and classmates.
• Collaborate and contribute positively to a classroom community.
• Demonstrate growing independence and a genuine enthusiasm for learning.

The observation is just one part of our holistic admissions process. We consider this experience alongside teacher recommendations, school records, and conversations with families as we seek to understand each applicant as a whole child.

Helping Your Child Prepare

The best preparation is simply helping your child arrive feeling rested, confident, and excited for the day.

• Follow your normal morning routine.
• Dress your child comfortably for classroom activities.
• Encourage your child to do their best, listen carefully, and enjoy meeting new teachers and classmates.
• Resist the urge to practice or quiz your child beforehand. We are interested in seeing how they naturally approach learning, exploration, and problem-solving.

Partnering with Your Family

You know your child best, and we value your partnership. If there are strategies that help your child feel successful in new environments, or if there is anything you would like us to know before the observation, we encourage you to share that information with us in advance.
