Advisory
Advisory is central to the Dexter Southfield experience.
Our Advisory program is designed to nurture the sense of belonging and community among students, foster relationships with trusted adults, and facilitate proactive monitoring of students’ academic progress, social-emotional development, and overall well-being.
In the Middle School, Advisory is single gender and made up of students from the same grade. Class 6 Advisory centers on character lessons through stories and group discussion. In Class 7, Advisory primarily focuses on what it means to be a good friend and the value of helping others. Class 8 Advisory examines character through leadership and establishing one’s own values. Middle School Advisory culminates in preparation for the required Class 9 Ethics course.
Upper School Advisory is co-ed and grade specific. Class 9 Advisors work closely with students as they learn to transition into their first year in the Upper School. Students stay with the same Advisory group in Classes 10–12. Advisory programming looks at topics appropriate to students’ stages of social-emotional development as they move through the Upper School and further develops their leadership, empathy, and character.
