The primary goal for our camp is to hire individuals who love the camp experience, thoroughly enjoy working with children, can be reliable to help promote a sense of consistency for our campers, and are outgoing. Dexter Southfield is fortunate to have a 90% return rate on summer staff. Positions listed below are limited.
All applicants should be 15 years of age or older. Please see job descriptions below to learn more about position requirements.
Staff are expected on campus between 7:30 a.m. until the last camper leaves (typically 3:45 p.m.).
All positions are seasonal. Preference is given to candidates who are able to work the full camp season between June 17 and August 9.
If selected, all staff and volunteers must undergo a background check and attend our staff training in the week before camp begins.
Hired staff in our various camps will be required to work a minimum number of days.
- Junior Camp, Day Camp, Senior Camp, Sci-Tech Camp, and Girls in Science, operating under a 7-week schedule, will be required to work 30 days.
- Hockey Camp and Sports Camp, operating under an 8-week schedule, will be required to work 35 days.
- Musical Theater Camp, operating under a 3-week schedule, will be required to work 11 days.

Day Camp (works with 6-10 year olds)

Assistant Camp Director
Day Camp seeks an assistant director who is 21 and older to enthusiastically interact with 6-10 year old children. The assistant director will collaborate with the Camp Director to plan daily and weekly activities, provide mentorship to a staff of 30 counselors and activity directors throughout their daily activities, and work directly with the camp office to create an engaging summer experience.

Specialists
Our Day Camp seeks individuals who are 18 and older to oversee special programming throughout the day. This year, Day Camp seeks specialists in art, dance, sports, water sports, and yoga, and more. Each position will ensure safety of campers and staff, create lesson plans, monitor supplies, and ensure proper upkeep of program areas. Some activity specialists, like those instructing archery or small watercraft, must hold current instructor certifications.

Group Leader
Day Camp seeks individuals who are 18 and older to provide leadership for counselors and children 6 to 10 years old. Will work with Camp Director to record daily attendance, promote active and engaged play during activities, and ensure safety of campers and counselors alike. Previous camp counselor experience a plus.

Volunteer
Limited opportunities for volunteers 14 years old and older are available to work with campers who are 6 to 10 years old. If selected, volunteers will be considered to be a part of our staff and will be asked to follow the same guidelines and adhere to the hours of our camp staff. Community service hours accrued during the summer season can be used for school or other local group requirements. As with all of our applicants, selected volunteers must undergo a background check and attend our yearly staff training before being placed with a group.

Girls in Science (works with 8-12 year olds)

Program Director
Girls in Science seeks a program director who is 21 or older to assist the Camp Director and Assistant Director with creating an engaging environment for girls in STEM. Will instruct classes for girls 8-12 years old, collaborate with instructors and staff to improve class offerings, and curate all-camp experiences to help support the weekly STEM challenges offered throughout the 7-week season.

Instructor
Girls in Science seeks instructors who are 18 and older to instruct one or more sessions of science and/or technology-based classes for children 8-12 years old. Will create lesson plan, suggest supplies, and lead classes throughout the summer. Instructors will often join Girls in Science activities after classes end.

Counselor
Girls in Science Camp seeks counselors who are 17 and older to enthusiastically interact with and encourage a love of STEM in 8-12 year old female campers as they navigate their way through themed science and technology-based curriculum.

Junior Counselor
Girls in Science Camp seeks junior counselors who are 15 and older to enthusiastically interact with and encourage a love of STEM in 8-12 year old female campers as they navigate their way through themed science and technology-based curriculum.

Volunteer
Limited opportunities for volunteers 14 years old and older are available to work with campers who are 8 to 12 years old. If selected, volunteers will be considered to be a part of our staff and will be asked to follow the same guidelines and adhere to the hours of our camp staff. Community service hours accrued during the summer season can be used for school or other local group requirements. As with all of our applicants, selected volunteers must undergo a background check and attend our yearly staff training before being placed with a group.

Junior Camp (works with 3.5-5 year olds)

Volunteer
Limited opportunities for volunteers 14 years old and older are available to work with campers who are 3.5 to 5 years old. If selected, volunteers (also called CITs) will be considered to be a part of our staff and will be asked to follow the same guidelines and adhere to the hours of our camp staff. Community service hours accrued during the summer season can be used for school or other local group requirements. As with all of our applicants, selected volunteers must undergo a background check and attend our yearly staff training before being placed with a group.

Medical Team (works with 3.5-13 year olds)

Camp Nurse
Candidate must hold current license in Massachusetts. Will provide care for campers and staff, review camper and staff health paperwork, monitor and order medical supplies, and work with camp directors to ensure safety and health of campers and staff alike. Preference given to candidate who is able to work the full camp season between June 17 and August 9, 2024.

EMT
The camps seek a candidate who is 18 or older with a current EMT certification in Massachusetts. Will assist with medical care and emergencies at camp. Will work with camp nurse, camp directors, and office staff to ensure that camper and staff health paperwork is up-to-date. May be asked to help with event tasks and setup.

Musical Theater Camp (works with 11-13 year olds)

Activity Specialist
Our camps seek individuals who are 18 and older to oversee special programming throughout the day. This year, Musical Theater Camp seeks those interested in overseeing music direction and choreography. Each position will ensure safety of campers and staff, create lesson plans, monitor supplies, and ensure proper upkeep of program areas.

Counselor
Musical Theater Camp seeks counselors who are 17 and older to enthusiastically interact with and encourage a love of theatre in 10-14 year old campers as they prepare for a short performance at the end of the two-week session. Will provide guidance in acting, singing, and behind-the-scenes activities as well as supervision for non-theatre programming. This three-week session will run between week 2 and 4.

Sci-Tech Camp (works with 8-12 year olds)

Counselor
Sci-Tech Camp seeks counselors who are 17 and older to enthusiastically interact with 8-12 year old children as they navigate their way through science and technology-based morning classes and a variety of afternoon activities.

Junior Counselor
Sci-Tech Camp seeks counselors who are 15 and older to enthusiastically interact with 8-12 year old children as they navigate their way through science and technology-based morning classes and a variety of afternoon activities.

Senior Camp (works with 11-13 year olds)

Instructors
Senior Camp seeks instructors who are 18 and older to instruct one or more sessions of performing arts, sports, and STEM activities for children 11-13 years old. Will create lesson plan, suggest supplies, and lead classes throughout the summer.

Counselor
Senior Camp seeks counselors who are 17 and older to enthusiastically interact with 11-13 year old campers. This camp will cycle through age-appropriate activities throughout the day. Counselors will provide careful supervision during off-site field trips.

Sports Camp (works with 6-12 year olds)

Specialists
Sports Camp seeks specialists with a passion for athletics who are 18 and older to instruct one or more sessions of athletics for children 11-13 years old. Will create lesson plan, suggest supplies, and lead classes throughout the summer.

Group Leader
Sports Camp seeks individuals who are 18 and older to provide leadership for coaches, junior coaches, and children 6 to 12 years old. Will work with Camp Director to record daily attendance, promote active and engaged play during activities, and ensure safety of campers and counselors alike. Previous camp counselor experience a plus.

Coach
Sports Camp seeks individuals who are 17+ to coach children 6-12 years old in multiple sports each week. Coaches will be expected to enthusiastically interact with campers of varying skill levels and will be asked to lead skills and drills designed to increase understanding of each sport played on the fields and courts of our campus.

Junior Coach
Sports Camp seeks individuals who are 15+ to coach children 6-12 years old in multiple sports each week. Junior coaches will be expected to enthusiastically interact with campers of varying skill levels and will be asked to assist with teaching skills and drills designed to increase understanding of each sport played on the fields and courts of our campus.

Volunteer

Pool (works with 3.5-13 year olds)

Assistant Director
The Pool seeks an assistant director who is 21 and older to enthusiastically interact with 3.5-13 year old children. The assistant director will collaborate with the Pool Director to plan engaging swim lessons for 3.5-10 year olds, provide mentorship to the lifeguarding staff, provide careful supervision of all campers in the pool and on the pool deck, and work directly with our nine camp directors to create an engaging summer experience for all involved. Candidates must have current lifeguard and CPR/AED certifications and at least two years' guarding experience, and current WSI certifications a plus.

Lead Lifeguard
The pool staff seeks a head lifeguard who is 18 and older to help provide a safe and organized atmosphere to our camp's daily swim operations. Will assist Pool Director with creation of lifeguard rotations, creating out-of-water activities for reluctant campers, and acting as a liaison between Pool Director and guard staff. Candidates must have current lifeguard and CPR/AED certifications and at least two years' guarding experience, and current WSI certifications a plus. Along with other responsibilities, will ensure safety of campers in the pool, lead swim lessons, and maintain safe environment on the pool deck.

Lifeguard
The pool staff seeks lifeguards who are 16 and older to help provide a safe and organized atmosphere to our camp's daily swim operations. Candidates must have current lifeguard and CPR/AED certifications. Applicants with current WSI certification preferred. Will ensure safety of campers in the pool, lead swim lessons, and maintain safe environment on the pool deck.

Additional Opportunities

After Camp (Extended Day) Counselor
Our extended day program seeks staff who are 15 and older to enthusiastically interact with 3.5-14 year old children in our after hours program ending at 5:30 p.m. Counselors interested in this program will work with the camp they have been hired for (Junior, Day, Sci-Tech, Hockey, etc.) starting at 9:30 a.m. and ending their day at the extended day program at 5:30 p.m. Please also apply for counselor position in preferred camp(s) in this application. These later hour positions are limited. Please note that no bus transportation is available for staff members working in this position.

Bus Monitor
The transportation department seeks staff who are 15 and older to able to assist with taking morning attendance, ensuring safe afternoon bus stop departure, managing behavior, and collecting parent feedback at bus stops on each of our summer buses. Please note that not all buses return to campus at the end of their routes.

Photography and Social Media Intern
The Camp seeks an intern who is 18 or older to help capture the story behind our summer programming. Working under the direction of the camp office and collaborating with our camp leadership staff, the intern will be responsible for taking photos daily and managing our social media content on Facebook and Instagram.
